Listening to The New Sound by Geordie Greep.
I want to preface this as my (Nick Aiuto) first review for this blog. I know it's a bit off-putting to have a first review be a perfect score, but after attending his concert last night and multiple listens in the pocket on this album. (9/16/2025) I'm confident in this score.
Let me preface this with my basis for ranking an album. I focus on this central question, does the album do what it has set out to do? Whether it's to create an indie rock album with simple sounds and catchy lines, or in this case, provide a diverse, multi genre, instrumental and vocal experience that can only be described as a new sound. I would classify this album as alternative, as it is unable to be placed in any other contemporary genre. It has long songs, drawn out ballad-esque instrumentals, and vulgar lyrics that I will only describe as theatrical performances, and genre wise, latin american, classical, blues, and heavy metal inspirations.
Personal Favorites
My standout tracks are Terra, Holy Holy, Through a War, As if Waltz, and The Magician. As a 10/10 album, they all are amazing tracks but those are the clear personal favorites of mine. I love the latin-inspired elements of terra, the hard rock and loud, bombastic lyrics on holy holy, the political and large themes of through a war, the instrumentation and thematic aspects of as if waltz, and the long, drawn out - ballad-esque nature of The Magician.
Live Performance Experience
Seeing the band live only amplified my appreciation for the album and for Geordie. Every song they played was an extended cut. Off the album solos, different takes on the lyrics, individual performances from each member beyond a solo, and just overall experience things you would only get from a smaller act in St. Andrews Hall.
If you like experimental/alternative albums and are not afraid to go outside your comfort zone and try something new, this album is for you. It's not a daily listener of mine, as it's too out there to be on most of my playlists, but it definitely has a place in my music taste as a perfect album that does everything an album of its purpose and genre should.
Overall score: 10/10
